Text Editor is a free in-browser editor for text and code files. It runs entirely in your browser - there is nothing to install and no sign-up required - and opens files from your computer and from Google Drive. The editor is powered by Ace and includes syntax highlighting for many languages, line numbers, word wrap, adjustable font size, find and replace, go to line, multiple cursors, undo and redo, keyboard shortcuts, and light and dark themes.

Text Editor is designed with privacy in mind. Your files are processed in your browser. A Google sign-in is needed only when you use Google Drive, and that access uses the limited "drive.file" scope - only the specific files you pick or create, never your whole Drive.

What You Can Do

  • Preview Markdown, HTML, CSV/TSV, XML, JSON, SVG, LaTeX, and RTF files live with Edit, Split, and Preview view modes, plus a clean reading view for plain text
  • Save back to the original file on your computer in Chromium browsers, back to Google Drive, or as a downloaded copy
  • Autosave writes edits to your file automatically, and recovery drafts in your browser help protect unsaved work from a reload or crash when storage is available
  • Runs in current versions of Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Safari, plus Chromium-based browsers such as Opera, with no plugin or extension required
  • Optionally install from the Google Workspace Marketplace to add Text Editor to Google Drive's "Open with" menu

Our Approach

Text Editor is a web app, not a download. Everything happens in your browser: opening files, editing, rendering previews, and saving changes back to your computer or to Google Drive. Your files are processed in your browser only.

When you use Text Editor with Google Drive, we use Google's official APIs and the limited "drive.file" scope to open and save only the files you select or create. The file contents themselves pass through your browser only.
